Sandhya’s story was terrifyingly familiar. Born into a family that values sons over daughters, this sweet girl faced abuse and neglect from birth, simply because of her gender. Her mother also suffered from domestic violence, unable to stand against Sandhya’s father.
A caring neighbor notified IGP social workers about Sandhya’s home life. Social workers confronted the girl’s father, explaining that his actions were illegal and that he would face charges. Sandhya’s father reluctantly agreed to begin changing his behavior toward his daughter, beginning with allowing her to join IGP’s program.
