My Story

Gnaneswari’s father only wanted sons. He believed the only valuable children were boys, as they provide for their parents in their old age and carry on the family name. After Gnaneswari was born, her father began to severely neglect her because she is a girl. He refused to touch her and began to hate her mother for giving birth to her. A year after Gnaneswari was born, her mother gave birth to her second child: a son. Her father was overjoyed but began to pressure his wife to abandon Gnaneswari.

Her mother shared their situation with our social workers and they were able to confront Gnaneswari’s father regarding his negligence and intervene on Gnaneswari’s behalf.
