My Story

Joshika had to compete with her brother for basic rights and love. Her father was very disappointed when she was born a girl. He refused to love her or show her any type of affection. He beat her mother until she finally gave birth to a son four years later. He praised his son constantly and smothered him in love. Joshika’s mother still suffers at her husband’s hand, but she tries her best to protect Joshika from his abuse.

Joshika’s mother was determined that she stay in school. However, after her brother’s birth, her father demanded that their full earnings be spent on his new son—which meant there was no more money to afford Joshika’s tuition. Her mother was helpless to change his mind.

When we met them, Joshika’s mother cried while sharing her dream that her daughter would have a full life without gender discrimination. We then talked to Joshika’s father about the legal and physical consequences of discriminating against his daughter and marrying her off early. He has since agreed to send her to school.
